On April 8, 2003, at age 72, Dr. Atkins slipped on the ice while walking to work, hitting his head and causing bleeding around his brain. He lost consciousness on the way to the hospital, where he spent two weeks in intensive care. His death certificate states that the cause of death was “blunt impact injury of head with epidural hematoma”.-Wikipedia

That was supposed to be a reply to somebody saying that he died due to the diet. Even if wiki has the cause wrong, the date and his age are correct. He was 72 and even if diet was a factor in the cause of his death then I’m sure his age and possibly genetics did as well. I’ve heard many rediculous theories for his death including that he was a raging alcoholic and that he was shot. It reminds me of Bruce Lee. The only ones that probably know for sure are close friends and family.

I honestly don’t advocate much for Atkins (Paleo-diet is far better), but I have read his book and the diet has proven itself over and over to be a highly effective tool for weight-loss. The program he lays out in his book and what the average Atkins dieter does are two different things. Atkins is vastly nutritionally superior and healthier than the Standard American Diet. If you want to be a Vegan that’s fine but you really don’t have to bash Atkins because it’s different from yours.

BTW, big difference from Atkins and the caveman diet. Read “Neanderthin: by Ray Audette”

  5. Chrisisms says:

While alive, atkins struggled with weight and his yo yo diet of plants and meat/dairy, requiring opposing digestive processes. atkins suffered from hypertension (high blood pressure) and acute myocardial infarctions (small heart attacks) only weeks before the fall. atkins could have been having a mini stroke or heart attack while walking infront of his apartment. In any case, atkins was an example of an unhealthy person overall. Meat causes cancer, Alzheimer’s, constipation, etc.

Where do you get your information and why would you downrate my comments?? I clearly cited my evidence and you retaliate with unfounded claims. You can’t prove that “meat causes cancer” as you say and even if you pull were to pull up some BS medical journal stating that meat-eaters have a higher incidence of cancer, I could pull up one that says otherwise… Besides I’m not advocating for Atkins, I’m advocating for Paleo and my point was that Atkins is NOT a caveman diet by a longshot.

  7. Chrisisms says:

‘You can’t prove that meat causes cancer”Meat is a source of several chemicals known to cause DNA mutations ie N-nitroso compounds, heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.”Meat consumption has been reported in over a hundred epidemiological studies from many countries with diverse dietscausing cancer by several routes, ie saturated fat and iron, independently associated with carcinogenesis’U.S. National Cancer Institute Library of Science journal PLoS Medicine 2007.

This is wrong, atkins is not a caveman diet at all. Cavemen didn’t eat dairy products and they did eat fruit. Search paleo diet to find out how you can eat 200-300 grams a day and stay in ketosis. Today I had a banana, a peach, a pear, and 8 small oranges and I’m still in ketosis! Atkins works for weightloss and is probably healthier still than the american diet but pales in comparison to Neanderthin / paleo diet.

at rest or submaximal activity the body utilizies 2/3 fats and 1/3 carbohydrate to utilize energy production. the contribution of protein to energy in neligable. Protein is only used to produce energy when you are doing a hawaii ironman or something like that.:)
